Otaku Expo happened last January 21-22, 2012 and is produced by Ozine, the same people who brought the three day long convention, Ozinefest, to the Philippine convention fray. I have to say the videogaming booth this year is a bigger success because of the variety of games available this time around.

Ozine’s Dennis Uy asked me to be in charge of the videogame booth for Ozine events, and I was more than honored to accept the challenge. Instead of focusing on a certain genre or one game, I’ve decided to target casual gamers who just wanted to play games during the convention. So we’ve decided to go with multiple games this time around.

The booth charges per game as well (P5 per game, that’s 10yen. Do the math =3) which is really cheap. The people guarding the booth have to eat too so making it a wee bit profit oriented helps our meal budget ^^

Gundam Extreme Vs being played here. I’m pretty sure nobody expected this game to be part of the booth, but it was nonetheless a hit among con-goers. It also helps if you play it in split screen on a wide TV ^^ Some Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 on the side too.

The latest incarnation of Blazblue, Continuum Shift EXTEND, also makes an appearance. The game isn’t readily available to everyone yet, since people have to order it and the cost isn’t exactly friendl. Everyone is waiting for the cheaper US version to come out on the 14th of February, so in the meantime they can play the games here. The game on the left looks familiar ^^

Hatsune Miku’s Dreamy Theater 2 is also up for playing in the booth as well. We didn’t expect the lines to be so long just to play MIku on a big TV ^^

The Vocaloid booth also had cosplayers playing the game as well.

Pretty interesting to note that there were more stick users among Blazblue players than Marvel vs Capcom 3 players during the convention. The guy in stripes on the upper left is Chase, the current Blazblue Champion in the Philippines. He’s the guy handling our meal money  ^^

Unlike previous conventions where the videobooths had the PS3s facing inside the booth, we’ve decided to make the booth more welcoming to other people by simply positioning them as such. The result was simply more people played the games and the volunteers who manned the booth had more personal space to rest within it. We occasionally let people inside the booth to play as well if we felt that there are too many people waiting in line (which happened a lot lol).

I think this was during the middle of the day, when customer count skyrockets. And as you can see, even the insides of the booth is getting full to accomodate customer demand. That’s why we have a sword-wielding samurai in the background to help guard the booth.

Hmmm what are all these people looking at?

A lot of people here are watching some big matches in Blazblue. Look at those life bars, pretty intense match we have here! I think it’s Q’s Noel Vermillion vs Andrew Ting’s Lambda 11.

It was pretty magical to see people become attracted to the screen the moment the OP music started. Everyone was glued to the screen as the exhibition matches unfolded.

We also had a Vocaloid contest wherein players compete in getting the highest score in “Storywriter”. Pretty hyped up side event.

We made it a point that the booth closes around 7pm so that the volunteers and even other staff members from ozine or other booths can play as well. We all need the R&R ^^

These guys were the Sunday Team, some of the people who helped out during Saturday weren’t able to make it. If you guys are from the Philippines and enjoyed the gaming booth, then we hope to see you again on Ozinefest. I’ll reveal some of the games to you soon, but for now I still have to finalize some things to help make the event bring more smiles than before.

Do you guys also do things like these for fun? I’ll have to admit, a good portion of the skills I’ve gained came from free work and I do encourage people to participate in work that can help you network or enhance your skills. Volunteering helps.

This Saber is from Kotobukiya, and the costume is from Fate/Hollow Ataraxia. This is actually one of the older Saber figures out there and I have to say it’s made quite nicely.

Nothing much to say about the packaging really. It doesn’t communicate much. But it does have some ‘happy vibe’ to it I guess.

This is one of those figures that I had fun looking at from every view. Every side to this figure serves some viewing purpose. I think she should be displayed with a revolving base like a music box ^^

Like i said from every side and angle ^^;; Ah, I just realized how short Saber’s dress is. (and we haven’t gotten to the fanservice section yet)

The dress looks nice, especially the folds. It also helps that her top doesn’t look like its stuck to the figure.

My only complaint here is the clumpiness of the hair. yes, i do know it’s  figure made from a time when the hair’s quality isnt the same as today. Doesn’t mean i cant feel irked though hahaha. This figure has so much movement in it that it’s a pity the hair isnt as fine flowing as the pose.

The ribbon looks like it’s being tussled about by the wind. Despite the front side being clumpy, the bun is very well detailed. Love the folds on the sleeves.

The tiny details, such as the extra frills and and the lines around her dress really compliment making the figure appealing. Without them, i would daresay the figure might be a bit boring, despite the nice posing.

Was thinking to myself if a figure with so much movement such as this should have a picture that conveys movement as well. I prefer the tilted photo, what about you?

Shapely legs followed up by flipflops that really convey movement. Slippers or slip-ons don’t ‘stick’ the the foot, they are somewhat ‘opened up’ whenever people run or walk.

I still prefer this kind of fan service rather than before. There is this certain allure to it, and those butt cheeks look really nice too ^^

I decided to sell this figure since 1.) I’m not much of a Saber fan and 2.) I have a big figure of her from GSC with the same costume. I’m not keen in having too much of the same kind in my figure collection. If there was a slight tinge of regret for this figure, it would be those butt cheeks lol.

I’ve placed the entire set up to the left of my desktop for easy viewing of strategy guides and combo videos XD The biggest challenge here were the cords. I had to buy an extension cord and rewire the entire table to accommodate the new stuff.

Any normal person would know that having a white PS3 is a hassle to maintain because the dirt is easier to see. Well, that’s exactly the reason. It just doesnt sit well with me that i cant see the dirt in my PS3, especially when i clean it regularly. Besides, white PS3s look nice.

Oddly, a friend of mine noticed that the controller is lighter than normal. This coming from a friend who also plays fighting games as well (wherein the weight of a controller is also important).

A lot of people were surprised that  I got Batman: Arkham City, instead of an RPG or a fighting game as my first PS3 game. Special thanks to Pete for lending me the Valkyria Chronicles (I havent enjoyed an RPG game like this ever since final fantasy tactics) and Aile for allowing me to borrow her japanese copy of Blazblue Continuum Shift Extend for a week!

Got myself a 32 inch LED Samsung TV. This i guess marks the first TV that i’ve ever bought with my own money. Feels pretty good to be able to get your own stuff XD

A good friend of mine got me this for Christmas XD. Will review it soon (because she demands a review XD)

Got Kamen Rider Kabuto last year and i Bought Kamen Rider W for my friend, we decided to “exchange” Kamen Riders for now.

This explains why i havent been posting lately. PS3 kept me away from doing proper review works or postings hahaha.

Ozine, and Team Onii-Chan was able to deliver last December 28-29 a figure-centric event. You don’t see this happening much in the Philippines as most conventions that cater to Japanese sub-culture enthusiasts focuses more on cosplay, or general anime stuff.

As I mentioned, I got around 100 pics so expect a lot of figures. All the figures presented during the convention all came from the members of Team Onii-Chan. Through their generosity they were able to give con-goers a large and respectable figure exhibit. The only thing that limited them I think was the number of tables, otherwise there would be a lot more figures ^^

I wouldn’t be able to name every figure, but I’m sure if you ask in the comment box someone will answer the question eventually.

I’ve decided to just take a collective picture of some of the nendoroids. If I went out of my way and took a picture of each and every single figure, I would be swamped. Any suggestions on how to upload pics in wordpress as fast as the system in figure.fm?

A bunch of Madoka nendoroids from different timelines and one Homura hell bent in protecting them all. We even have a detective Madoka (that’s actually Sharro from Milky Holmes ^^). My friend just recently gave me a Homura Nendoroid for Christmas and I’ll review it soon.

On a sidenote, I heard some HR people would place different figures in their office (an anime one, maybe a batman figure, a sculpture or something) to try and see which figure will the applicant first comment on.

Strength

My favorite character in this series has got to be Black Gold Saw! I’m also digging Chariot’s design in the series, but we’ll see.

I did a review of the BRS without the jacket and it was given away as a prize of a charity event back then (link). Personally, I like the one with the jacket.

I still prefer the other one with the jacket, but this one is nice too. This shouldn’t be called anime ver anymore due to the upcoming series this season. More like an OVA ver ^^

This white rock shooter must be a hassle to keep clean. Dust can easily settle and stick to paint and you can see it even more if it’s white paint.

Okay, I wasn’t exactly the one who bought it. My friend told me “Hey, I havent given you a birthday gift yet have I? I’ll buy you any figure as long as it’s in the 1,000 peso range”. That’s around two thousand yen, and for those who think that they wouldn’t find anything nice with that budget, think again.

SegaPrize isn’t exactly synonymous to quality and I’d have to agree. Their paintjob is usually a mess and the poses their characters take are sometimes too boring that you’d think they were posing inside a coffin. However, once in a while we are treated to something nice from them at a very affordable price mind you.

First thing’s first, be careful of the paint. The paint isn’t exactly the ones that GSC or alter uses just from the smell of it. So be careful of placing this figure near anything hot as it may cause paint stains to occur more frequently or chipped paint.

I won’t get much into the details as to who Saber from Fate/Extra is. Definitely its not Arturia mind you, and I for one am grateful for that because this Saber’s personality is quite fresh (read: extravagant spender). Fate/Extra’s characters were drawn by Arco Wada while the noble phantasms were designed by huke, so the game by itself is a design treat for those who are interested with said artists. In fact, I think Saber’s Noble Phantasm beats Archer’s Unlimited Bladeworks in terms of execution AND theme song hahaha.

I swear the paint is somewhat reminiscent to poster paint or acrylic paint, but its pretty nice for paint like that.

Her gown’s folds and creases are still ‘soft looking’ and I have to hand it over to the painters for painting the gold lines very well.

I really dig the semi-transparent plastic being used here. I just wish it were more transparent and also less plasticky. The base might be boring, BUT it somewhat fits the entire ‘red’ concept. At least it didn’t look out of place or downright ugly.

Saber Extra’s outfit really looks sexy whichever angle you decide to view her from ^^;;

We also have a head you can exchange with. This head looks similar to Takeuchi’s artstyle, and I don’t think the stern expression fits Aka-Saber’s demeanor in the game. The stern looking face might be more of Arturia’s yes?

You can see SegaPrize’s prominent paintjob (or the lack of it) but it’s forgiveable in this case I think.

Tried placing her sword in. It’s not as easy as you think. I suggest removing the head first before trying to put it in.

Hmmm. I gues si really do prefer Arco Wada’s face over Takeuchi’s in this case.

It’s not such a bad buy for a budget figure and the bad paintjob can be easily be repaired by seasoned modders out there. I suggest getting this before stocks run out

If GSC makes a figure out of her, just like they did with Saber Lily, I dunno what to do hahaha. Oh well, right now I’m just waiting for my Caster (from fate/extra as well) that has been delayed to January already. ^^

This version of Tamaki comes from Manaka de Ikuno!! Final Dragon Chronicle -Guilty Requiem-. The game puts the To Heart 2 cast in an RPG-fantasy setting of sorts. I can’t explain past the game, since I haven’t played it, but the character designs are charming enough to make people want to get a figure (even if they haven’t played the game yet) ^^

First of, special thanks to my comrade, Pete, for allowing me to review this figure. Some figure collectors I know have this thing about wanting to open the box first before anyone else, but my buddy here allowed me the first opening. To be honest, the packaging may have this dungeon feel, but it wasn’t as enticing as the figure in it. Other than the packaging design and my total hatred for Kotobukiya’s “sticky plastics”, my attention is now focused on that circular hole in the plastic located in front of the figure’s face. Any guesses what its for?

I think the best view of Tamaki would be the front view for, ahem, obvious reasons XD

This figure was obviously designed to showcase the front view alright. I’m digging the skimpy samurai-bondage design here, but I believe there were other designs that could have been made by Kotobukiya (or Volks)

The pose isn’t seductive as her costume may imply. In fact, I think its charming and it brings out some of the character’s cheerful personality to light here.

Despite being simple in design, the hair ornament, choker, head band and symbol on her chest didn’t give off a feeling that it was cheap. All parts after all, should compliment one another and not vie for attention individually. Fun fact, while taking pictures of this figure, my camera’s AF kept focusing on certain prominent parts. I’d have to say this figure was a challenge for various reason ^^

The hair was one big clump, except her twin tails which were separate clumps. However, like I said this figure was about complimentary parts and if this were a painting, I’d say it was balanced design.

Waist was sculpted beautifully. I guess it suits the dungeon feel very well if her abs were toned a bit just like this instead of a flat one

The waist armor is movable, but I still have yet to discover its use ^^

Kind of amazing how awesome these sculptors took every small detail into account and when I mean the detail I meant the fat and muscle that protrude when you are wearing something tights. Case in point, the thighs. The criss-crossing of the strings do not look like paint marks but really look like it was sculpted there as well

Sword and sheath are removable and interchangeable on both hands. However I don’t think you can put the sword inside the sheath.

That base. Despite being clean and …white, I do wonder why didn’t they just go for a dirty grey with some cracks to make it look like a pavement of sorts. For a 8,000yen figure, I think it should have something like that in it.

This figure is on my Christmas wishlist along with several other figures. Have you guys ever bought a figure from an anime or game which you haven’t watched/played yet, but the character design made you buy a figure of it?

Hrmmm another figma must have, Makise Kurisu from Stein’s Gate

A character from Love Plus, please don’t maul me for not knowing her name dear comrades ^^;;

…I really should get this Miku Append Figma , like ASAP.

I have so many figures I want to buy, but I’ve decided not to purchase them because of the restrictions I’ve made for myself. I really love figures, but I really should wisely approach my figure purchasing decisions carefully.

Hope you guys enjoyed the view. I think next month, they’ll be participating again. Hopefully I can lend some figures of mine if my ever-so-busy schedule allows it.

UP-AME is a yearly festival which usually occurs around November. I used the word festival instead of convention not only because that’s how its marketed through its communication efforts, but also because of the entire atmosphere of the event. Girls above are from their maid café, or in this case a yurei café. I tried to make the entire day awesome not only by going to UP-Ame, but also by visiting multiple areas that may also interest you guys as well.

There was hardly any tasty food stall there, so me and my comrade Pete (one of the animators of “My Little Pony”) have decided to eat in a Sake Sushi before going to the event.

As you can see, Sakae Sushi is a conveyor belt sushi restaurant. The food isn’t exactly fresh (unless it’s a pink plate) but it’s definitely affordable with its P400 (Y800) eat all you can price tag that comes with a refillable green tea.

I do suggest ordering a Yakiniku or something else that could remove the taste of fish in between plates.

My first choice was the California maki. Red plates are more expensive but they have 6 regular sized rolls in it, while the yellow plates contain 2 large rolls and are cheaper. Honestly you wouldn’t care about the price if you avail the eat all you can XD

I suggest skipping the “Ham with Bread and cheese maki” as it can immediately fill up your stomach and the taste isn’t really up there compared to the other maki and sushi that they have.

Their green tea. The stack of plates on the right is mine. I heard animators need a lot of energy (food) to keep up with the work load.

Blue plates rarely come out. Despite using cheap products such as eggs, the upside is they’re always fresh like the pink plates. We didn’t order any pink plates because of the stuff that was coming out were tofu dishes.

Now let’s move onto UP-Ame. Last year the venue was really small and there was a HUGE crowd. There were so many people that not only did the tickets run out, they also didn’t allow people to enter anymore. This year it seemed that the amount of people that are attending are smaller. Maybe its because a lot are attending AFA this year.

Like I said there were activities such as the sumo-wrestling contest, the balloon-dart stands and more. But it seemed that there were more people doing these things in the early afternoon as opposed to the latter hours.

Saw this awesome looking gunpla, so I had to take a picture of it.

There was actually an area that sold swords. The very long katana over there (I think it’s a nodachi) costs P14,000 (that’s Y28,000).

Team Onii-chan, the guys responsible for the figure displays for the past conventions, also had a symposium about figure maintenance during 2:00pm.

Blazblue Philippines was also present in UP-Ame and had a 3v3 tournament. We only lasted up till 7^th place sadly XD

Mom and my brother brought home some awesome desserts from the dessert fair from fullybooked. Awesome desserts were awesome, and this was just HALF the entire day. Spent the remaining half with college friends and did a murder mystery game for the first time. Being in a marketing-advertising course means you’re filled with colorful people and quite frankly the murder mystery was a bigger success because of that. Have you guys tried having something like this?

To those who are unfamiliar with the series, no they’re not twins. Those two figures are from Type-Moon’s Fate Series. To the left we have Saber in her bodyguard attire which you’ll see in Fate/Zero, while to the right we have Saber’s maid costume found in Fate/Hollow Ataraxia.

This figure was made by Kotobukiya and it really seemed like it was drawn by Takeuchi’s hand. I actually had to redo the shoot twice because I found out there were a lot of white dust all over Saber, its as if Saber has dandruff problems XD

I’ll be perfectly honest, I’m not into figures that try to look imposing by standing and staring intently at you. I find them boring.

She reminds me a lot of Konoe from Mayo Chiki. Must be because of the cross dressing portions. Just so you guys know, Saber won’t be having any girly portions in Fate/Zero at all XD (except maybe for her second to the last fight in the entire series).

See what I meant by staring intently? If you’ll notice the ahoge kinda broke off and my friend had to connect it back. Ahoges are apparently the most vulnerable part of any figure. How do you guys take care of your figure’s ahoge?

Still some white specks over there. Saber can totally pass off as a guy or even a VIP of sorts with this suit.

Base isn’t as boring. Oh, if you have the Kiritsugu figure you can actually connect both figures together. To be honest the Kiritsugi figure is way more interesting than this one. Can’t wait for GSC’s scaled figure complete with that bike!

Her hand is detachable and you can replace it with a the hand that can hold Excalibur. Strange coincidence that GSC has decided to go with a translucent Excalibur just like this one for their figma. XD

Time for some maid Saber now. I do hope that Type-Moon animates Heaven’s feel (Sakura’s route) and Fate Hollow Ataraxia. The former’s atmosphere somewhat resembles Fate/Zero’s level of despair because of Sakura’s circumstances. Oh and it’s the route where you get to see Saber Alter and Rider duke it out along with a one on one fight between Kirei and a certain servant =3

Can you believe this figure was made by GSC? Neither can I, the quality is kinda weird, and it’s not even a bootleg.

Saber’s face looks more like a doll, at least her pose is a wee bit more interesting than our butler Saber over there.

She can look like she’s pouting instead of tying her ribbon behind her if shot in this angle.

The quality of the cloth, the folds and all, certainly reminds me of Uplark Mio’s costume (the frills specifically). It looks stiff and lacks some ‘flow’ in it.

You can remove her skirt just so you know. Do you pose figures in your house with moderate amount of clothing or you go as skimpy as you can?

Base is pretty dull, but it somewhat complements the mood that the figure is trying to bring. The chair can be removed from the base for your playing leisure too XD

So there you have it, one servant, two ways of servicing XD Talk about versatile.
